Monthly merchandise purchase budget (based on COGS + desired ending inventory)

Step 1: Calculate Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)

Gross profit = 40% of sales ⇒ COGS = 60% of sales.

Month Sales (Rs.) COGS (60% of sales)
November 300,000 180,000
December 400,000 240,000
January 500,000 300,000
February 500,000 300,000
March 600,000 360,000
April 600,000 360,000

Step 2: Determine Ending Inventory

Policy: Maintain inventory to meet next month’s sales needs (in units). Assume cost of goods per unit is constant (for simplicity, use Rs. per unit). Since sales are in Rs., we approximate inventory in Rs.: Ending inventory = COGS of next month.

Month Ending Inventory (COGS of next month)
November December COGS = 240,000
December January COGS = 300,000
January February COGS = 300,000
February March COGS = 360,000
March April COGS = 360,000
April — (no next month)

Step 3: Calculate Purchases

Purchases = COGS + Ending Inventory – Beginning Inventory

Month COGS Ending Inv. Beginning Inv. Purchases (Rs.)
November 180,000 240,000 240,000* 180,000
December 240,000 300,000 240,000 300,000
January 300,000 300,000 300,000 300,000
February 300,000 360,000 300,000 360,000
March 360,000 360,000 360,000 360,000
April 360,000 — 360,000 360,000

*November beginning inventory = December 31, 2024, stock = Rs. 240,000 (from balance sheet).

Final Merchandise Purchase Budget

Month Purchases (Rs.)
November 180,000

Assets Rs. Liabilities & Capital Rs.
Fixed Assets (Net) 175,000 Share Capital 500,000
Current Assets Debenture (110,000) 110,000

- Investment 222,000 Loan (if any) 0
Total Assets 1,162,000 Total Liabilities 1,162,000

Note: The discrepancy arises because the loan was fully repaid by February, and the Profit & Loss includes cumulative net profits from January to March (Rs. 218,000) added to the opening balance (Rs. 100,000). Adjustments may be needed based on exact timing of loan repayment.
