What is economic rent? GROUP: A Long answer questions 2 × 10 = 20
2Answer
Economic rent refers to the payment made to a factor of production (usually land or a unique resource) above its opportunity cost. It arises when the factor is fixed in supply or possesses unique characteristics that no other factor can replicate.
Key Features:
- Pure Economic Rent: Earned by factors with perfectly inelastic supply (e.g., land in a fixed location).
- Quasi-Rent: Temporary rent earned by factors with limited mobility (e.g., a specialized machine).
- No Production Cost: Unlike wages or profit, economic rent does not involve any cost of production or sacrifice of alternative use.
Example:
If a farmer pays ₹1000 for land but could have earned ₹800 by renting it elsewhere, the ₹200 extra is the economic rent.
Formula:
Economic rent ensures efficient allocation of resources by rewarding factors with scarce or unique attributes.
