a) Write a paragraph on “The Problems of Water Pollution and Its Effects on Human Health.” [5]
5Answer
Water pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time, posing severe threats to both ecosystems and human health. The contamination of water bodies—rivers, lakes, and groundwater—occurs due to various human activities, including industrial discharge, agricultural runoff, improper waste disposal, and excessive use of chemicals. Industries release toxic substances such as heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic), chemicals, and oil into water sources, while agricultural practices introduce pesticides, fertilizers, and animal waste. Domestic sewage, containing harmful bacteria and viruses, further exacerbates the problem. Plastic waste and microplastics also contribute to water pollution, disrupting aquatic life and entering the food chain.
The effects of water pollution on human health are devastating and far-reaching. Contaminated water often carries pathogens like E. coli, cholera, and dysentery, leading to waterborne diseases that cause diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. Long-term exposure to toxic chemicals can result in chronic illnesses, including cancer, neurological disorders, and reproductive issues. For instance, arsenic contamination in groundwater has been linked to skin diseases, kidney failure, and increased cancer risks in regions like Bangladesh and parts of Nepal. Children and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable, as their immune systems are weaker, and exposure to pollutants can lead to developmental disabilities and miscarriages.
Moreover, polluted water disrupts ecosystems, reducing biodiversity and affecting food security. Fish and other aquatic organisms die or become unsafe for consumption, depriving communities of a vital protein source. The economic burden of water pollution is immense, as healthcare costs rise due to treatable diseases, and tourism and agriculture suffer from degraded water quality. Addressing water pollution requires collective efforts, including stricter regulations on industrial waste, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and raising public awareness about proper waste management. Governments, communities, and individuals must work together to ensure clean water access for all, safeguarding both health and the environment for future generations.
