a) Causes of Soil Pollution
Soil pollution is the contamination of the earth's surface with harmful substances, primarily caused by human activities. The major causes include the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture, which degrade soil fertility and introduce toxic residues. Industrial waste, such as heavy metals, chemicals, and sludge, is often dumped directly into the soil or seeps in through improper disposal, contaminating groundwater. Urbanization contributes significantly through the accumulation of non-biodegradable waste like plastics, glass, and electronic waste, which do not decompose and release toxins.
