a) Write a paragraph on “The Problems of Water Pollution and Its Effects on Human Health.” [5]
5Answer
Water pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time, posing severe threats to both ecosystems and human health. The contamination of water bodies—rivers, lakes, and groundwater—occurs primarily due to industrial waste discharge, agricultural runoff, sewage, and improper disposal of household chemicals. Industries release toxic substances like heavy metals (mercury, lead, arsenic), chemicals (pesticides, fertilizers), and untreated sewage into water sources, making them unsafe for consumption. Similarly, agricultural activities contribute to pollution through the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which seep into water bodies, altering their natural composition. Domestic waste, including plastic, detergents, and pharmaceutical residues, further exacerbates the problem by introducing harmful pathogens and chemicals into water supplies.
The effects of water pollution on human health are devastating and far-reaching. Contaminated water serves as a breeding ground for waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and hepatitis A, which spread rapidly through ingestion of polluted water. Heavy metals like lead and mercury accumulate in the body over time, leading to chronic illnesses such as neurological disorders, kidney damage, and even cancer. Pesticides and industrial chemicals disrupt hormonal balance, causing reproductive issues and developmental problems in children. Additionally, the consumption of polluted water weakens the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections and diseases. Long-term exposure to contaminated water can also result in skin diseases, eye infections, and gastrointestinal disorders, further deteriorating public health.
To mitigate these problems, strict regulations must be enforced to control industrial emissions and agricultural runoff. Public awareness campaigns should educate communities about the dangers of water pollution and promote sustainable practices, such as reducing plastic use and proper waste disposal. Governments and environmental agencies must invest in wastewater treatment facilities and monitor water quality regularly. Individual efforts, such as conserving water and avoiding the use of harmful chemicals, can also contribute significantly to preserving clean water resources. Addressing water pollution is not just an environmental concern but a critical public health issue that requires immediate and collective action to safeguard the well-being of current and future generations.
