Define 'genetic drift'.
1Answer
Genetic drift is a random change in allele frequencies within a population due to chance events rather than natural selection. It occurs especially in small populations where random sampling of gametes can cause some alleles to become more common or be lost entirely. Over generations, drift can reduce genetic variation and lead to fixation of alleles, potentially causing founder effects or bottlenecks. Unlike natural selection, which favors traits that enhance fitness, drift has no direction and is driven by stochastic processes.
