Define the term 'totipotency'.
1Answer
Definition of Totipotency
Totipotency is the inherent ability or genetic capacity of an isolated living cell (such as a plant explant) to divide, differentiate, and regenerate into a whole, complete, and functional organism under suitable nutrient and aseptic culture conditions.
- Concept & Demonstration: The theoretical concept of cellular totipotency was first proposed by Gottlieb Haberlandt (1902), often regarded as the father of plant tissue culture, and was later experimentally demonstrated by F.C. Steward (1958) using cultured carrot phloem tissue.
- Significance: This property forms the biological basis for modern plant tissue culture techniques, micropropagation, and somatic embryogenesis.
