What is closed economy?
2Answer
A closed economy is an economic system in which a country does not engage in international trade (exports and imports of goods and services) or financial transactions (capital flows) with other nations. In such an economy:
- No imports or exports: All production and consumption occur within the domestic market.
- Self-sufficiency: The country relies entirely on its own resources to meet its needs.
- No foreign investment: There is no inflow or outflow of capital from or to other countries.
- Limited economic growth: Without trade, technological advancements and resource diversification are restricted.
Key Features:
- Autarky: Complete economic independence from the rest of the world.
- No foreign exchange transactions: The country does not deal in currencies or international financial markets.
- Government control: Economic policies are designed to sustain domestic production and consumption without external dependencies.
Example:
A hypothetical country producing all its food, clothing, and machinery domestically, with no trade with other nations, represents a closed economy. However, in reality, pure closed economies are rare due to globalization and interdependence.
