Give a balanced chemical reaction for the preparation of CO in the laboratory. Why is CO harmful gas? [1+1]

2

Answer

HCOOH+H2SO4 (conc.)heatCO+H2O+NaHSO4
Laboratory preparation of CO from formic acid and conc. H2SO4

Balanced chemical reaction: When formic acid (HCOOH) is heated with concentrated sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), carbon monoxide (CO) is produced along with water (H₂O) and sodium bisulfate (NaHSO₄). The balanced reaction is:

Sulphuric acidSulphuric acidFormic acidFormic acid
Structures: Sulphuric acid, Formic acid

Why is CO harmful? Carbon monoxide (CO) is harmful because:

  • It binds strongly with hemoglobin in red blood cells (~200 times more than O₂), reducing oxygen-carrying capacity.
  • This leads to carbon monoxide poisoning, causing headaches, dizziness, weakness, and even death at high concentrations.
  • It is odorless and colorless, making it undetectable without proper equipment.
