State Gay lussac's Law of gaseous volume.

2

Answer

Gay-Lussac’s Law of gaseous volumes states that when gases react together, they do so in volumes that are in the ratio of small whole numbers, provided all measurements are made at the same temperature and pressure.

This law was proposed by Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac in 1808 and is based on experimental observations. For example:

  • 1 volume of hydrogen (H₂) reacts with 1 volume of chlorine (Cl₂) to form 2 volumes of hydrogen chloride (HCl):
  • 1 volume of nitrogen (N₂) reacts with 3 volumes of hydrogen (H₂) to form 2 volumes of ammonia (NH₃):

The law highlights the simplicity and proportionality of gaseous reactions under constant temperature and pressure, forming the basis for Avogadro’s hypothesis and the development of the mole concept. It applies only to gases, not liquids or solids.
