Slag is a non-metallic, glassy, or rocky by-product formed during the extraction of metals (especially iron and steel) from their ores. It consists primarily of metal oxides and silicates, which are less dense than the molten metal and float on top. Slag is formed when flux (e.g., limestone, CaCO₃) reacts with impurities like silica (SiO₂) in the ore at high temperatures, producing a fusible slag that can be easily separated from the purified metal.
