Read the following text carefully and answer the questions given below: Family - the fundamental social institution has many forms and its role and also very different across the society. As in sociology, family has equal importance in business, management and administration. Family firms are one of the important topics in business and management. Family firms are sometimes defined as a privately held company which is owned controlled by one or more family units and is also inherited by one or more children of the proprietor's (s) upon his / her (their) retirement. Although the family firms are considered as the 'traditional' in terms of technology and 'conventional' in business focus they have significant roles in current day business and management. Various official data show that large corporations in many part of the world be it in the USA, China, France, Germany or India are owned by families. A study conducted in the year 2012 shows that 80% of all private business in Germany and the Netherlands, 75% of largest companies in India and Chile, 76% of top firms in the United Kingdom and 70% of all registered companies of Australia are family business or family firms. In case of the USA, it had estimated that 20.3 of the 22 million business are family owned or governed. Despite the fact that family firms have dominant positions in the global economy, we can see some positive as well as negative contribution of them. Since the sizes, nature and contribution of each firm could be different some features are common to all; and most of the family firms believed to have the strengths like lower operation cost, better market positions due to branding, reputation, strong social capital and socio-political networks. Higher efficiency is also seen as an added value. It also has been revealed that family firms can respond quickly to market changes and can mobilize family members in implementing non market strategy. Apart from these, it is found that many family firms keep alive some traditional business practices. However, the critics are of the opinion that family business has many drawbacks like unprofessionalism, stagnation in development and nepotism. Thus, family firms are very challenging and critical to the non-family employees. Questions: a. Describe family as a fundamental social institution applying your knowledge of social institution. b.
